Can Qigong Improve Cognition and Memory?

There is limited research on the effects of Qigong on cognition and memory, but the existing studies present promising results.

A 2020 review analyzed 13 studies involving 893 participants with mild cognitive impairment. This review suggested that practicing Qigong for 3 to 6 months improved cognition and memory. Qigong programs, which consisted of 40 to 60-minute sessions three to six times a week, were found to provide cognitive and physical benefits similar to those obtained from other cognitive-physical programs and physical exercises. However, since none of the studies included long-term follow-up, it remains difficult to predict the long-term effects of Qigong. Additionally, it is still unclear whether Qigong benefits mild cognitive impairment from all causes, such as stroke, diabetes, and advanced age, or only certain causes.

A 2019 review examined the effects of meditation, tai chi, Qigong, and yoga on cognition in adults aged 60 and older. This review included 9 Qigong studies (about 650 participants), 3 of which were also included in the 2020 review. It was found that Qigong improved cognition and memory, but this effect was generally observed only when at least one of the following conditions was met: the program length exceeded 12 weeks, the exercise frequency was three to seven times a week, or each exercise session lasted 45 to 60 minutes.
